Let’s start the conversation about what it takes to be successful online. Since there is so much to know, we will break it down for you here. There are many books and instruction guides online. Imagine reading several 200-page books about this process and at the end they tell you it could take years to implement the necessary parts of a complete online marketing strategy.
One term people are familiar with is search engine optimization (SEO). How do people find you online? What are you offering that people want – enough to choose your content over the literally billions of options available online.
For people to find your page, your content needs to include the top search terms and phrases people are searching for. Google keeps track of every single search term you type in, and every ad or link you click on.
Therefore, you need to employ search term plugins and products like SEMRush or Google Search Console in order to determine if your website and content has search terms and phrases that people are going to search for.
I recently reviewed an insurance website where the only search terms on the site that were recognized were the name of the agency, Mirimac Partners, and their 800 number. Now, it is very unlikely anyone is going to search for these terms in a browser search.
This company offers life, health, auto and commercial insurance, but because these terms were barely mentioned on their site, Google pretty much ignores those. If the page titles, something called H1 tags, and text don’t use these terms and use them appropriately, then they are unlikely to be registered by Google as even being part of the site.
What happens is companies with this knowledge align their key words and phrases according to what Google is looking for, so they will always beat the sites that don’t, which is most of them.
To improve the site, what they need to do is add content that describes their products and how they work. The headlines (remember headlines) on those articles need to tell search engines what they are talking about. Then, they need to thoroughly discuss in detail what they are offering.
Plus, there are typically H1 thought H6 tags in your website’s theme that are extremely important headings for each page on the site. These must be aligned according to what your site is about and what the content is about. If you want better SEO and traffic on your site, you must understand H-tags, keywords and keyphrases. There is a huge amount published about these things so take some time and read them
In hiring an SEO company, you need to know enough about these things yourself to hire the right company or person. There are millions of people touting the results they can get for you, which are largely completely untrue, but businesses hire them anyway, spend thousands of dollars and get the same results they had before.
Be your own advocate and learn about these things so when you choose an SEO consultant you will get some results.
